Ontario Supporting Aylmer’s New Initiative to Support Active Seniors

Aylmer, Ontario –The Province of Ontario announced that it has selected the Town of Aylmer as a recipient of the Ontario Seniors Community Grant for the innovative “Active Living East Elgin” program, which is set to commence this fall. The program will benefit from the grant, totalling $14,004.

“This initiative will enrich the lives of approximately 200 seniors in the Aylmer community, promoting health, well-being, and connection within our community”, said Rob Flack, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London. “Programs like this foster active living and ensure our seniors have the resources they need to thrive.”

The Ontario government is investing up to $6 million through the Seniors Community Grant Program to support 282 community projects that help seniors and older adults stay fit, active, healthy and socially connected, close to home. Programs range from physical activities to exposure to the arts and music, to learning opportunities, day trips, and so much more.

Up to $25,000 per project is invested in local programs, services and events to provide seniors with opportunities for greater social inclusion, volunteerism and community engagement. The Seniors Community Grants Program is a unique Ontario government grant designed to reduce social isolation, fight ageism and create positive connections

“Active Living East Elgin” will offer complimentary recreational opportunities from September 2024 through March 2025, featuring a variety of workshops and drop-in sessions tailored for seniors. Key highlights include a monthly “Connection Club/Circle of Friends,” which will provide a platform for social interaction through activities such as pickleball, shuffleboard, and card games, all accompanied by light snacks and refreshments.

“Aylmer is proud to have a lively and engaged community of older adults”, said Jack Couckuyt, Mayor of Aylmer. “We appreciate the support from the Province of Ontario as these funds will empower our 55+ community to connect, learn, thrive, and continue to enjoy a healthy and fulfilling life here in Aylmer.”

In addition to recreational activities, the program will host a monthly lunch-and-learn series, focusing on relevant topics for seniors. Participants will benefit from engaging presentations on subjects ranging from fitness and home safety to fraud prevention and water safety training, along with a shared meal.
